Music for performance/Plan & review on learning

Alien 3- I thought this trailer was visually a combo of action and horror. The sound track used amplified this with dialogue such as "is there an alien on bored" which helps to raise tension the music used also allowed for the vibe to become a lot more intense than it would have been without the music the soundtrack managed to draw me in and make me feel slightly scared without seeing the whole film which is good as it is a horror film.

Baby group dancing- I found this clip very funny however i didn't think the music went well with the actual video i thought it needed to have something much more upbeat then the track that was used as i didn't feel that the used song would be associated with roller skating, i also think that the visuals that were used distracted from the actual product that was trying to be sold. I felt like this clip was light hearted and funny however i felt it didn't live up to its full potential it should of had a more upbeat and fast paced song in order to make the video even more enjoyable.

Apocalypse now helicopter film scenes- I thought that this clip was very intense at all times, the sound track that was used created a vibe i would expect from a scene like this it makes the scene seem very heroic on top of action packed, it had an almost superhero vibe at times especially when the helicopters dived in mid-air, just watching the clip made me feel exhausted but it also made me feel like i was watching a marvel film.

Charlie Chaplin- the lion's cage- I thought that this clip was very funny and entertaining, i think that the music used helped to set a very chilled and happy vibe as without it parts of the clip could be seen as more serious then they really are, overall this clip was very light hearted and funny.

Sound can effect a video in many ways it can change to vibe of a scene massively e.g. a scene could have a very tense vibe but the music used could change the feel of the scene to a more funny vibe an example of this would be the clip Charlie Chaplin- the lion's cage in this scene Charlie Chaplin gets locked in a cage with a live lion in most cases this could be a tense scene however with the music that was used the scenes vibe changes to become much funnier and light hearted.

I chose to use this trailer as i felt that when the sound was removed it would be interesting to see what would happen if i built it back up in a different way as i felt i could keep the dark scary vibe the same but still deliver in a slightly different way to the original. I looked at the soundtracks of other horror films such as Freddy vs Jason and sinister and from this i found the soundtrack of nightmare on elm street which i then used over the top of the woman in black trailer however i felt it would be best to start  the sound track after the video had played a little which left me with a space in the track which was empty so i found a spooky sounding wind sample in order to build up some tension and create the spooky atmosphere which i felt was needed.

Eluveitie - King (Celtic Metal) - This genre consists of the normal metal sound (heavy guitars and vocals) but also consists of heavy violins, bagpipes and flutes. The genre tends to have solos in most songs the traditional instruments for these solos are guitars, flutes and violins how ever it is not limited to these instruments. The lyrics in this genre are normally fantasy e.g. Eluveitie - King, this song talks about a man who is above the king but still a servant himself to something much higher then he is, the music is also normally sung in English or Swedish but is not limited to these. I find this music can have two sides to it, i find that at times the music is very melodic with soft light hearted vocals which is very nice to sit down and relax to but it can also change dramatically, while still remaining melodic the whole track can become very heavy which really shows the metal side of the genre.

Rammstein - Amerika (German Electronic Dance) - This genre normally consists of a singer, bassist, synth player, drummer and one guitarists however can work with only one. This genre is very focused on the synths and vocals the vocals are either fantasy, a play on words or critical. The song i have chosen is both a play on words and critical towards America. The lyrics are normally sung in German but it is not unusual for songs to be made in English, Spanish or Russian. The tone for this genre is very heavy and despite being called German electronic dance seems to be much more metal then dance.

Different rhythms and tempos

Beethoven's - 5th Symphony - Every time the main riff is used in this song the tempo changes instantly slowing down making the track seem like it is moving in a more tense way and dramatic as it is constantly changing from tense to relaxing.

Diana Ross - Love Hangover - This song starts with a slow chilled out tempo the track then turns into a faster disco dance song with a more upbeat vibe

Ike And Tina Turner - Proud Mary - This song starts as a very chilled out low tempo song but then changes suddenly and dramatically into a much faster and more dance like song with a happier vibe which stays this way to the end.

Radio Head - Paranoid Android - This song starts off very slow and dark remaining this way for most of the song however when it drops at one point the tempo decreases dramatically making the track slower and heavier but still keeping the original dark vibes from the higher tempo and making them even darker.

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody - This song starts at a very low tempo with a acapella opera sort of vibe the song then becomes slightly faster and louder while keeping the opera vide and also being very dramatic and very theatrical but then changes again becoming lower and changing to a rock vibe giving much more energy and becoming quite angry then drops and becomes the slow opera song that it began as it then becomes slower but retains the energy for a sort time and then loses that energy at the very end the tempo then become hard to identify as the singer then increases his tempo while slowing down the tempo of the piano this is clearly done to make you listen more and suggests this part of the track is the most important part of the whole track.

3.1 & 4.1 my performance

In my performance I chose to do a DJ set I began by looking at the genres of music I was interested in which included metalcore, trance, dub-step and hair metal but in the end I settled on dub-step and began to look for some tracks once I had a large set of tracks for my Dj performance so I needed to narrow it down to only 2 tracks, I decided to use skrillex – kill everybody and bring me the horizon – the sadness will never end (skrillex remix).

I then began to research videos with the view to create one shots which would fit the tracks I found this part the hardest as I was looking for acapella vocal samples and most of the songs I wanted to use didn’t have an acapella version of the track available so I looked at other tracks and eventually settled on a total of 4 one shot samples which included slipknot – psychosocial, skrillex – equinox (first of the year), zedd clarity and asking Alexandria - the final episode (lets change the channel) these were all cropped to become vocal samples i then imported them into Serato i chose not to add any effects to the samples as i felt they would sound better without and it would also have effected the way the sample would have been used e.g. i couldn't use any live effects during my performance.

I finally needed to practise my set and include the samples with live effects as part of my improvisation i found places where i would trigger the samples at the right time however i chose to only pick the effects i would use and not how i would use them as i thought it would give me more freedom to improvise more live. The effects i used were roll, flanger, echo, slicer and the filter.

4.1 I was happy with my final performance however i feel i could improve the set in a few ways e.g. i was not happy with how i transitioned from 'kill everybody' into 'the sadness will never end'. I feel i could have kept the tracks in time together much longer then i had done if it wasn't for the vocals clashing, i could have dropped 'the sadness will never end' at a different part of 'kill everybody' where there we're no vocals.

I was happy with my use of effects and samples, i feel that the samples go well with the tracks and i placed them all in the best places possible. I feel i used the roll and filters well together and used the slicer in a way that compliments the tracks well.

I could include this in a bigger performance by taking the set i have already made and adding more samples and tracks to the set it would also be a good idea to look at the samples i already have and see how versatile they are, if a sample is very versatile it will allow me to use it with multiple tracks but if it isn't versatile then i wouldn't be able to do much with it limiting my creativeness. I could also start vdjing which means when i do something on the decks e.g. trigger a sample it effects the lighting. I could add another dj to my set or even a live producer.

Extending improvisation 24.10.14

Today i was looking at extending my improvisation skills i did this by inserting the samples that i made last week from abelton live into serato and adding them into my DJ set i also started adding more effects to my mix e.g. echo and flanger with more filter after doing this i stopped looking ahead of my set (looking for the next track before i need it) i think this will help with my improvisation skills as it will make me think very quickly on my feet otherwise my tack will run out before i can continue the mix

My Performance Plan 10,10,2014

I would like to preform at the wardrobe as it is a larger venue with a good sound system it also has plenty of fire exits i also want a rule of no drinks around the music equipment or any electrical equipment, i would like to preform a DJ set using a DDJ-SX, my pioneer SE-MJ741 bass head headphones, a laptop with my music and Serato DJ full version, a large sound system and a good lighting rig. I will be focusing on trance and dub-step however this is not my final decision for the genres, i would like to use strobe lights of various colors i would like red, blue, green, yellow and purple to go through the performance with colours fading from one to another over time and the cycle to repeat over and over again,  i would like the performance to be roughly 3 hours long and an hour of this performance to be with lewis, i personally don't feel anymore confident and don't think i have improved at all this is because i have been using the same skills i do normally and not pushing myself to try any new skills or anything i may not feel 100% confident with however in order to rectify this i will be starting to practice scratching as this is something that i am also learning outside of the course so it should be improved very quickly i will also be working on making samples to use in conduction with my mix

Music Improvisation And Performance Skills

today i am going to be starting work on music improvisation and performance skills which is focusing on my performance and improvisation skills my overall aim for this unit is to be able to think fast as a DJ allowing me to be able to adapt to my audience when using the pioneer ddj-sx with serato DJ I also want to improve my understanding of the ddj-sx effects and cacapabuility

i went on the DJ controller for the rest of the day and practiced my DJ skills using the tracks above i mainly looked at improvisation with the fx, hot cues and roll i also looked at the slicer slightly in order to make the track more my own off the top of my head

at this point i am on the first track of my mix and i am experimenting on the different types of sounds i can get using the echo effect with different timing structures allowing me to highlight parts of the track

here i am tapping the bpm into the fx section of the controller so the effects are quantized if i didnt do this the effects would be off beat and end up ruining the track instead of complementing them

this is where i was mostly improvising in this pitcher you can see i am using the slicer and the filter however i was also using the roll with the filter

here you can get a better look at when i was using the roll fx to make the track stutter/loop to highlight a sound in a track or the add a small amount to the track its self

here i am adjusting the EQ of the track to make all the sounds on both tracks equal so one part of track 1 is not being over powered by part of track 2

Radio Review And 5.2

I have listened to my own and the other learners podcasts and will be reviewing each one bellow

Mine-I thought that i chose music that related to the interview (metal music for an interview about rock and metal music) but i think i needed to turn the music down quite a lot, i think that i delivered good vocals throughout the interview however i think that ben could have spoken a bit louder as he seemed to be mumbling quite a lot, i think that all the questions were on topic and none needed editing at all

Abby-I thought that abby music choice was not good as she was talking to a bass player who likes metal music and she put house as the background track, I thought that the questions were well prepared she was talking to a bass player and dove into his personal life like why he chose to play bass and how old he was, i think abby delivered good vocal throughout however i thought that it was strange that she randomly started laughing at one point i also think that ben was mumbling quite a lot through the interview

Reece-I thought that reece chose good music for the interview (rock music for an interview with a rock star), I thought his question were well thought out and well prepared but at the same time they were about the genre not me and the interview was about me not just the genre itself, I think that reece delivered good vocals throughout i also feel i did the same

Ben-I thought ben chose good music for this interview it related to abby very well, I thought the questions were well thought out e.g. what would you have done if you wasn't a singer? I thought that ben mumbled quite a bit through this interview but abby's vocal was good i also found it strange when they would laugh randomly however ben says this was so we could see the real her which i thought was a clever tactic

on my interview with ben (rock band interview) i edited the audio by chopping up a background track so it finished at a certain time i also edited the original interview by also chopping and re placing parts of the interview so it sounded more profeshinal i also made all the volume levels equal

Understanding Own Responses To Body Image 4.1 20/3/14

Traditional indian culture is different from mine in many ways, the way they dress is a massive difference on a normal day. Indian women will wear Shari with bangles all over there bodies, this makes them look extremely colorful and joyful, where as Indian men will wear a Kurta and no jewelry.  Western people tend to wear jeans and a t-shirts and they might wear a ring, a necklace, a bracelet or a watch.

Food is also something that is different there main cuisine are different curries and rice they are also very big on the types of spices they use. Westerns most known cuisine is fish and chips and tea.

Aboriginal Australians have a very different culture to mine, one big way is the way they dress they keep it to a minimum, men wear sheet like underwear and a necklace with bones attached to it, women wear the same thing along with a long shirt, both genders wear makeup over there whole body but mainly on there face, chest and arms.

There diet is also very minimal they drink only water and there food is called bush food it consists of anything found in bushes berries or little bugs like meal worms.
